How should a brand choose goods and services for a China trademark filing?

A product list is a starting point, not a filing specification. Check the exact goods and services against current CNIPA classification guidance before filing.

Start with the commercial scope

Write down the products or services that the applicant actually offers or plans to offer in China. Include the product name, how customers buy it, and whether a related service is genuinely offered. Keep the intended scope separate from a speculative list of every possible future activity. A filing brief should make it possible for a China professional to assess coverage and conflicts without guessing what the business sells.

Check the official classification and wording

CNIPA's guidance on understanding goods and services classification explains why classification must be read with the specific goods or services. Do not assume that an English product label, a foreign registration or a competitor's class list transfers directly into an accepted Chinese specification. Check the current classification materials and accepted descriptions at the time of filing.

Questions for review

  1. Which goods or services are sold now, and which are concrete launch plans?
  2. Does the proposed description match the way the product is actually offered?
  3. Are the Chinese and English names of the product consistent across the brief and evidence?
  4. Could a different description create a material gap or an avoidable conflict?

The CNIPA public-service guide is the reference for the applicable filing procedure. A classification choice is case-specific; this article does not assign classes to a particular product.

Discuss a specific matter

Prepare a non-confidential summary of the applicant, proposed mark, goods or services, official documents and dates. Use the contact page for a first brief. Do not send confidential case files through a public page before the intake channel is agreed.
