CHINA FILING GUIDE

Prepare a better
China trademark question.

Use this guide to organize a first discussion. A page cannot decide registrability, route or deadlines for an individual matter.

01 / ROUTES

Two routes to discuss

DIRECT CHINA APPLICATION

File through the China system

For an applicant without a China business domicile, an authorized trademark agency is required for the domestic route. Confirm the applicant, mark, goods and services before instruction.

MADRID DESIGNATION

Designate China internationally

A Madrid filing depends on eligibility and a basic application or registration. China examines the designation under its own rules; this route is not an automatic approval.

Official references: CNIPA on foreign applicants and WIPO on Madrid filing. Checked 1 Nov 2026.

02 / THE MARK

Which version of your brand?

List the exact word, logo and any Chinese name already used or planned. A translation, transliteration or market nickname may raise a separate question. Record who created and uses each version; decide search and filing scope only after review.

03 / COVERAGE

Describe the real goods and services.

Class numbers alone are too broad for a useful first brief. Provide product examples, sales channels and planned China use. China also uses a detailed similar-goods-and-services table, so wording requires local review.

Official reference: CNIPA classification guidance. Checked 1 Nov 2026.

04 / FIRST INQUIRY

What to bring to the first conversation

Keep confidential case evidence, identity documents and passwords out of a first inquiry.
